Artificially generated turbulence: a review of phycological nanocosm, microcosm, and mesocosm experiments

چکیده
Abstract Building on a summary of how turbulence influences biological systems, we reviewed key phytoplankton-turbulence laboratory experiments (after Peters and Redondo in Scientia Marina: Lectures plankton turbulence, International Centre for Coastal Resources, Barcelona, 1997) Marrasé (Marine Ecology Progress Series 205:291–306, 2000) to provide current overview artificial generation methods quantification techniques. This review found that most phytoplankton studies using feature some form turbulence; it is recommended use turbulent dissipation rates ( ? ) consistency with physical oceanographic limnological observations. Grid-generated the dominant method used generate providing quantified values. Couette cylinders are also commonly due ease quantification, albeit as shear not . Dinoflagellates were primary phytoplanktonic group studied their propensity forming harmful algal blooms (HAB) well apparent sensitivity turbulence. study majority experimental setups made from acrylate plastics could emit toxins these materials degrade under UV light. Furthermore, cosm systems sufficiently large accommodate full range length scales, omitting larger vertical overturns. Recognising interactions extremely complex, continued promotion more interdisciplinary recommended.

متن کاملIs it possible to extrapolate results of aquatic microcosm and mesocosm experiments with pesticides between climate zones in Europe?
Higher tier studies to assess the environmental risks of pesticides have been performed mainly in Atlantic Central Europe and North America and results of such studies have been extrapolated to other climatic regions such as South Europe (Ramos et al. 2000; López-Mancisidor et al. 2008a). Since climate (e.g., sun hours, rainfall, temperature), agroecosystems (e.g., crop rotation, field size), a...
متن کاملMicrocosm experiments can inform global ecological problems.
Global-scale environmental problems are rarely regarded as amenable to traditional scientific experiment. We argue here that small-scale experiments using 'model organisms' in microcosms or mesocosms can be a useful approach for apparently intractable global problems, such as ecosystem responses to climate change or managing biodiversity through the design of nature reserves. An experimental, s...
متن کاملMicrobicidal Activity of Artificially Generated Hydroxyl Radicals
The hydroxyl radical, one of the reactive oxygen species, has one unpaired electron in the structure, so that it tends to deprive other substances of an electron which is so-called oxidation. It is known that hydroxyl radicals produced by immunological response kill invading microorganisms by the oxidation. Besides the immune system, it has been demonstrated that hydroxyl radicals play an impor...
متن کاملa comparison of linguistic and pragmatic knowledge: a case of iranian learners of english
